DREADLOCKS

What symbolize the dreadlocks?

The dreadlocks are a form of settlement of the hair that is frequently found among members of the Rastafarian movement. This way of taking the hair is very characteristic, because it requires that the hair is not combed or cut, it becomes a recognizable and obvious.

In the original members of the Rastafarian movement (or Rastafarah), which belonged to the black race characterized by the hirsute hair, dreadlocks arose in the process of not comb the strands in a very short period.

For the partnership between the Rastafarian movement and settlement of this form of hair, the hairstyle popularly known as "Rastas", which is a term that has been wrongly conceived over time.

Today, in this era in which we live the dreadlocks have become an instrument of fashion; a simple hairstyle, dirty and full of lice which has no place in this cynical society. The dreadlocks are much more than that: it is the hair of the Lion, are the roots of an oppressed people for more than 400 years and that now flourishes in the ghetto. As previously cited the dreadlocks symbolize a Rasta, but it is good to mention that not every Rasta is a dreadlock or all dreadlock is a Rasta.

It is the banner of Rastafarians. In antiquity inspired fear in the society by their "aggressive" appearance, but today is a means of protest toward the Babylon system, along with rounded and multicolored berets calls TAM.

There are two versions of the meaning of this word. The first is that means "hairstyle of fear", the second "locked, with knots."

The difference between "Dreadlocks" and "Rasta" is that the dreadlocks is the hairstyle, each dreadlock is each tube, and Rasta is being, the Rastafari person, which is why I&I know that "not every Rasta is a dreadlock and not all dreadlock is a Rasta". The dreadlocks are also a symbol of purity.

As Los Cafres (Argentina) says in them song "Dreadlocks":

"Know what we are bringing
Dreadlocks is not a fashion
Dreadlocks is a gem
Symbol anti-hypocrisy
The lack of roots and memory
Bureaucracy mask imposed a profile
of Decent person
Forgetting point forgetting the important thing
(...)"

How was born this hairstyle?

The Rasta movement was born in the era of the 20's. Since then, has evidenced religious and political beliefs through hairstyle, as well as an intimate connection with Jah.

Some Rasta prevent haircut quoting the biblical prescription of Leviticus 21:5 which states "Do not make baldness upon their heads ...”.

The name Dreadlocks was assigned by the ridiculous aversion to non-believers; the term was adopted and popularized internationally by the Bob Marley song "Mandy dreads" of 1975. The religious origin is in the Bible, as a belief of respect for himself and pampering (recall that some Rasta represents one of the 12 tribes of Israel).

In the social and cultural context have led many interpretations, as the dreadlocks are used as a symbol of opposition to oppression of the colonizer, as a symbol of dissatisfaction with Babylon and now have also taken a very strong aesthetic character.

Not only Rastafarians use Dreadlocks; are also a symbol in India, used by Sadhus (holy men), and also used in Ethiopia (Rasta colors are the colors of the flag of Ethiopia) and some other cultural groups.

Development and maintenance of dreads

To make dreadlocks there are many techniques, so here are some well-known:

Natural way:

It takes quite some time (note that resemble a witch during that period) so that your hair form an independent tuft (with breaks to cut). There are some things you can do to speed up the process, but all have side effects. The best way is the natural.

Comb's technique:

  1. Need a comb that is not going to break. Normal plastic bristles are weak to make dreadlocks. Some fine pet’s combs serve perfectly. Sows need to be strong and long.
  2. Hair Rubber. Are small and black and withstand washing. You could use normal rubbers but they are better and not pulling your hair.
  3. Hair Tweezers. Use them to work the rear of the hair while separating and dreadlocking. Any clip can also hold hair.
  4. A friend or two that appreciates you a lot. Dreadlocking is going to take quite some time.
  5. A jar of special wax for dreadlocks. This is what makes all the work. Keeps hair together, it gives better appearance and helps train them in less time. And of course a good special wax... Because it works faster, it smells better and gives your hair the food he needs to stay healthy. Make sure that do not contain oil.
  6. A bottle of soap for dreadlocks. Need soap to clarify the hair completely and not bearing any conditioner, or some perfume. Is advisable to use soap pills because they has no hair-conditioner. Problem with the pill is that soap can dry out your scalp and cause dandruff. Also perfumes and other waste left behind. A good test for soap is washing and smelling hands, if soap smell remains in your hands is not good for your dreadlocks.

Wax technique

The wax is probably the most common and famous of substances that you can apply. There are several brands of wax, but you must use one that is beeswax. Do not confuse this beeswax with the solid form of beeswax used to make candles. Pure beeswax is used in solid and smooth..

Council to apply the wax solid: You must use a piece of wax, as a cube, and spread in the area you want to convert into tuft (uses a heat source to make penetrate). Wax does not work like glue and you must wait to be fixed at your hair and become tuft. fixing wax lasts half a day (usually less), then dries and is absorbed by the hair, but until then you must be careful where support your head. To get the maximum result careful not wash excessively.

In conclusion, treatment should preferably be natural, without any type of goods, and craft, so to make them requires several hours of work. These hours depend on the hair for work, his long, quantity, and type of hair.

It is known that among Rastafarians dreadlocks must be natural as being Rastafarian is a natural. It is also known that the natural dreadlocks do not lose the natural movement of the hair and are not hard. Many people make the dreadlocks adding sailing, waxes, liquid, or chemical acids, which is not necessarily desirable

A dreadlock must be flexible and malleable. The products could tighten dreadlocks and make them lose naturalness, which is the essence of a rasta.
